Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Even though we had a little bit of rain, our ride was relaxing and tranquil, and our raft captain was friendly and knowledgeable, pointing out features of the surrounding lush tropical forest.
Martha Brae takes its name from an Arawak Indian woman. According to legend, Spaniards looking for gold forced her to show them where a local gold mine was located. Pretending to lead them to the treasure, she led them to a cave and suddenly disappeared. The soldiers ran out of the cave only to be swallowed up by the rushing waters that had miraculously changed direction. The river continues to flow down this new path and the legend lives on.
