Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
Our first port was Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, a Malaysian state on the northern part of the island of Borneo. Malaysian dancers and musicians greeted us at the port. We spent most of our day at Mari Mari Cultural Village, learning about the cultures and traditions of some of Malaysia's 32 indigenous tribes. Each of the homes were built by descendants of the tribes they represent.

We sampled Sabahan traditional delicacies from each ethnic group.
We try on traditional Bajau wedding headdresses, Steve learns to use a blowpipe, and Sandi gets a henna tattoo.
Our visit culminated with a presentation of traditional dancing followed by a delicious lunch.
Our final stop of the day was the Filipino Market, featuring handicrafts, street food, and local fruits and vegetables.

Leaving Mari Mari Cultural Village, we stopped to see the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, a beautiful example of Islamic contemporary architecture. Often called the Floating Mosque because of the man-made lagoon which surrounds it, it's the largest mosque in Kota Kinabalu.
