São Paulo
Sandi's brother Russ was our excellent São Paulo guide, giving us an overview of the city's history as we visited several places including Pátio do Colégio, where São Paulo was founded by
the Jesuits, and Catedral da Sé. We had fun at the Mercado Municipal (public market), a large historic building with stalls full of
amazing displays of meats, fresh produce, cheeses and more. We sampled the exotic fruit, and shared one of Russ's favorite treats, a mortadella sandwich from Hocca Bar.
We still had room later on for feijoada at Dona Flor Restaurant. Feijoada is considered Brazil’s national dish and consists of a rich black bean stew served with several kinds of meats, rice, sautéed kale, roasted cassava flour (farofa) and sliced oranges.

We spent a relaxing day at Embu das Artes, a town that has embraced the arts and has held an Arts and Crafts Fair here since 1969. We wandered the charming and colorful streets, antique stores, craft shops and art galleries, admiring the hand-crafted items. There were hundreds of exhibitors, along with food vendors and cafés. We purchased some small paintings, one of
them depicting Embu’s central square.

We will long remember all the amazing things we saw and experienced on our visit to Brazil, but the memories we will most cherish are of the time we were able to spend with Russ, Lia, and our new niece Nina...priceless!
