Pompeii, Italy
The ship docked in Naples, and we headed for Pompeii, where our excellent guide, Gaetano Manfredi, met us and made its history come to life. In AD 79, Pompeii was buried under 30 feet of volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted. The ruins were not discovered until the 16th century. The excavations, which continue today, began in
1748 and give visitors an example of what everyday Roman life was like.
