London
Next we joined Jen, Shanti and Joe at the Tate Britain for "The EY Exhibition: Van Gogh and Britain", a major exhibition that brought together over 50 works by Vincent van Gogh. The exhibition provided the opportunity to view Van Gogh's artwork, to see British culture through his eyes, and to see him through the eyes of the British artists he inspired.
Above: "Avenue of Poplars in Autumn", "Sunflowers", "Starry Night", "Prison Courtyard", "Self-Portrait".
We all wandered back to the Pimlico neighborhood for a yummy fish and chips lunch that we enjoyed picnic style, in a park close to our hotel. That evening, Jen joined us to attend the musical "Come From Away" at the Phoenix Theatre.

A stroll the next morning around colorful Chalcot Square provided some wonderful photo opportunities!
The Tower of London was a secure fortress, a royal palace, an infamous prison and is protected as a World Heritage Site.
The peak period of the Tower's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, were held within its walls.
A superstition holds that "If the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it”, so there are always at least seven ravens in residence.

From the menus hidden inside vintage books to the adorable sweet treats (like the March Hare's pocket watch macaroon) and savory sandwiches to the fruity "Drink Me" potion, everything was both delicious and perfectly themed.
It's always hard to leave after a great trip but it's also nice to return home with such wonderful memories. Memories of two fascinating cities, Amsterdam and London. Memories of interesting historic places and cultural sights. But most of all, memories of warm family moments, spending time with our daughters, and being able to meet Jen and her family.
